Taking The Plunge ...

By performing a clean install of Windows Vista x64.   Screw upgrade installs, they rarely work properly.

Wish me luck.
I'll need it.

Update Blast!  I decided to hold off just a little longer, especially since Service Pack 1 for Vista has been released to those w/ MSDN Subscriptions like myself.  I performed a clean install of Vista Enterprise Edition x64 on my work desktop yesterday, applied Service Pack 1, and it works quite nicely.  I noticed faster performance than with XP (mostly thanks to Superfetch), and more importantly, awesome system stability.  All of the little quirks I experienced with Vista have vanished thanks to Service Pack 1.

I am now wondering if I should bother with Vista x64 on this machine at all, since it is currently max'd out with 4Gb RAM.  I'd prefer 8 Gb, or even 16 Gb since I am going to be running x64 in the first place.  Drat!  Now I think I have to spend money on new hardware.  It is definitely time to wait until I can decide on what hardware I wish to go with.

Hmmm, an Intel quad core is definitely sounding real yummy all of the sudden; that and 16 Gb RAM....perfect for a tasty VMWare environment, too.

Overgeekin' alert taking place.

I had the opportunity to set up a new machine for a neighbor. It had Vista on it. I found it to be almost unusable from the get go. I imagine if I had spent more than 2 hours with it I could get used to it, but I'm going to stick with OS X and XP.

Vista was released way too soon. Using the release version felt way too much like using beta software to me. Service Pack 1 makes a heck of a lot of improvements in terms of stability and functionality. I noticed Windows Server 2008 reads "SP1" once it is installed.

Interesting.
